The week has been relatively calm, compared to the previous 5 weeks. It has been 6 weeks now since Brian's surgery, and finally he is starting to feel like he's healing.
The TPN procedures went well. We saw Dr. Miller on Wed., and he was very happy to see how great Brian looked. The output of both drains had decreased significantly, as well as changed to a light color. This indicated to him that the pancreas likely has sealed itself off. He told Brian to start eating whatever sounded good, so then we could tell (the output would jump significantly right away if it was still leaking). He also took out the JP drain. Brian was very surprised to be allowed to eat, and we went straight from Ellis Fischel to Taco Bell for a light lunch. His normal appetite is still not back, but he's getting there.
The doctor wanted him on the TPN for 48 hours longer. We talked with him on Friday, and he decided to take him off, based on the stability of the drain. The output has increased some, but still not much, and the color is good. We will monitor this all weekend, then check back in on Monday. This made it so much easier to leave town for the weekend without all the equipment.
They are also allowing him to start his chemo up again, which he did right away on Friday morning. He gives himself a subcutaneous shot once a day for 14 days, then 14 off. We're hoping for minimal side effects, if any. So far, so good.
Enjoy the routine of your life, as we long for normal, everyday activities to resume.
I lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2
